If windsurfing and/or kite-surfing is your thing or if you are just looking for something new to try out, head over to Lake Arenal the best destination in Costa Rica for windsurfing, and even considered by many as one of the top spots for windsurfing in the world.
Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica with 33 square miles, it’s depth varies from 30-60 meters depending on the time of the year, and the winds average 33 miles per hour; the best time of the year to windsurf in this lake is during the summer months, from the end of November through April; it is located in the northern highlands, and it can be accessed through the city of Tilarán in Guanacaste or through La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela, a very popular touristic site where you can enjoy the hot springs, and different eco-tourism activities with the imposing Arenal Volcano sitting in the background.
The windy conditions and warm temperatures of the area make it perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing, although it is also ideal to practice stand-up-paddle, do some kayaking, jet skiing, boat tours and even fishing.
There are several companies near Lake Arenal that offer all necessary gear to practice these sports, and they also offer lessons by qualified instructors for beginners, TicoWind is the most popular company in the area. Windsurfing is generally done at the northern end of the lake far from the Arenal hydroelectric plant.
Other spots where windsurfing can be practiced in Costa Rica are: the Papagayo Gulf, which has calm waters and strong winds, and for more experienced windsurfers Bahía Salinas and Puerto Soley near the Nicaragua border.
